Carpet rarely fails all at once. It fades, flattens, and holds onto smells a little more each year, until one day the room just looks tired no matter how much you vacuum. Most South Jersey carpets last 8 to 12 years depending on the fiber and the traffic. Here are the seven signs that yours has reached the end — plus the one situation where a deep cleaning is still worth trying first.
1. The pile stays matted no matter what you do
Run the vacuum, and healthy carpet springs back. When the fibers in your traffic lanes stay flat and shiny even after a thorough vacuuming, the twist in the yarn has broken down. That is structural wear, not dirt — no cleaning brings it back. Hallways and the path from the sofa to the kitchen show it first.
2. Stains keep reappearing after cleaning
A stain that vanishes after a professional cleaning, then wicks back up within a week, usually means the spill soaked through to the padding. The pad holds the stain like a sponge and feeds it back into the carpet every time the fibers get damp. If you are cleaning the same spot for the third time, the problem is underneath.
3. Odors survive a professional cleaning
Pet accidents, spilled milk, and years of everyday life settle into the pad and the subfloor. If a room still smells musty or sour a few days after a proper hot-water extraction, the odor lives below the carpet. Replacing the carpet and pad — and sealing the subfloor if needed — is the only real fix.
4. You can see ripples, wrinkles, or loose edges
Small ripples can sometimes be fixed by re-stretching. But when the carpet has pulled away from the tack strips, the backing has delaminated, or the ripples come back within months, the backing itself is failing. Delaminated carpet cannot hold a stretch and will only get worse.
5. Allergies get worse at home
Carpet traps dust, pollen, and dander — that is normal, and vacuuming handles it. But an old carpet with worn fibers and a saturated pad holds allergens no vacuum reaches. If your family breathes easier away from home, or symptoms spike in one carpeted room, the carpet may be the reservoir.
6. The padding feels dead underfoot
Walk the room in socks. If some spots feel hard and flat — especially in front of the sofa or the bed — the padding has compressed past recovery. Dead pad makes even decent carpet feel thin and loud, and it lets the carpet backing grind against the subfloor, which wears the carpet faster.
7. It is simply old
Builder-grade carpet in a busy home often looks tired at year five. A quality carpet like a 40 or 50 ounce Saxony can look good past year ten. If you do not know how old yours is and two or more signs above sound familiar, age is doing the talking.
When cleaning is still worth a try
If the carpet is under eight years old, the pile still springs back after vacuuming, and the issue is surface dirt or one isolated stain, a professional cleaning is a reasonable first move. It costs a fraction of replacement. But if you have checked off three or more signs on this list, cleaning is money spent delaying the inevitable.
