Search “how to choose the right flooring” and you’ll get a thousand articles that list every flooring material ever invented and tell you they’re all great. That’s not helpful. You don’t need to know about every floor. You need to know which one belongs in your house.
After years of in-home estimates across South Jersey, we’ve found the right answer almost always comes down to five questions. Answer these honestly and the choice usually makes itself.
1. Who lives in the house?
This is the big one, and it’s really two questions: kids and pets.
- Young kids mean spills, crumbs, and toy cars driven at speed. Luxury vinyl plank and a good stain-resistant carpet both handle this well.
- Dogs mean claws and accidents. Luxury vinyl plank is the most forgiving floor ever made for dog owners. If you want carpet, choose a solution-dyed fiber with a moisture-barrier pad.
- Cats mean claws too, but mostly on carpet. Cut pile beats loop — loops snag.
- Empty nesters can choose on looks alone. Lucky you.
2. Which room are we talking about?
The right floor for a bedroom is the wrong floor for a basement. Room by room:
- Basements: luxury vinyl plank, full stop. Concrete slabs hold moisture, and vinyl doesn’t care. Carpet works only if the slab passes a moisture test.
- Kitchens and entryways: luxury vinyl plank again — water, mud, and dropped pans are its home turf.
- Living rooms and hallways: carpet and vinyl plank both work. Pick on feel and budget.
- Bedrooms: carpet is still king upstairs. It’s warm, quiet, and cheaper, and nobody spills coffee in bed often enough to matter.
- Stairs: carpet for safety and noise, vinyl for looks and easy cleaning — but stairs are where installation quality shows most.
3. How much moisture does the room see?
Water is the great divider. Luxury vinyl plank is waterproof — the plank itself cannot be ruined by water, period. Carpet holds moisture in its pad, which is why it fails in damp basements even when the carpet itself looks fine.
If a room has ever had water in it — a past leak, a humid summer smell, a dehumidifier that runs constantly — that room is telling you it wants vinyl.
4. What’s the real budget?
Installed prices in South Jersey right now, roughly: carpet with new pad runs $4 to $8 per square foot, luxury vinyl plank $5 to $12. The overlap is bigger than people expect — a mid-range vinyl and a nice carpet often cost about the same.
Where budgets go sideways is the prep work underneath: demolition, disposal, subfloor leveling, and transitions. Two quotes on the same room can differ by hundreds of dollars based on what’s included, so compare line items, not bottom lines. Our cost guide breaks down every line item we see on real quotes.
5. How long are you staying?
Selling in two years? Don’t over-invest — a clean, neutral mid-range floor photographs well and appraises fine. Staying fifteen years with two kids and a golden retriever? Spend on the wear layer and the pad, because that’s the part you’ll live with every single day.
The shortcut most people miss
Here’s the honest truth: samples in a showroom lie to you. The lighting is wrong, the room is wrong, and the little 6-inch square tells you nothing about how a floor feels across 400 square feet. The single best way to choose is to see full-size samples in your own rooms, in your own light, next to your own furniture.
That’s the whole reason we work the way we do. We bring the samples to you, measure while we’re there, and give you one itemized quote. You compare real options in the actual room, and the right choice stops being a guess.
That’s normal — most people are. Book a free in-home estimate and we’ll bring samples of both so you can walk on them in your own space. Call (609) 300-0509 or request your free estimate online. It takes about a minute.
