Short answer: yes, the plank itself is waterproof. You could leave a luxury vinyl plank in a bucket of water for a week and it would come out fine. No swelling, no warping, no ruined boards.
But your floor is not one plank in a bucket. It’s hundreds of planks locked together over a subfloor, and that’s where the honest answer gets more interesting. “Waterproof” is real — it just doesn’t mean what most people think it means.
What waterproof actually means
Luxury vinyl plank is made from vinyl and a stone or wood composite core. None of those materials absorb water. That’s a genuine, huge advantage over wood-fiber floors that can swell when wet.
- Spilled drinks, pet accidents, wet shoes, and mopping: completely harmless to the planks.
- A dishwasher leak discovered the same day: the planks survive. Pull a few up, dry everything, click them back.
- A flooded basement: the planks survive that too — but read the next section before you relax.
What waterproof does not mean
Water can’t hurt the plank, but it can absolutely get past it. The seams between planks are tight, not sealed. Given enough time or enough water, moisture works its way through the joints and sits on the subfloor underneath.
That trapped water is the real problem. Under the floor, it can grow mold, soften a wood subfloor, or loosen the adhesive on a glue-down installation. The planks on top will look perfect while the damage happens underneath — which is why “waterproof floor” does not mean “ignore the leak.”
- Standing water still needs to be cleaned up promptly, for the subfloor’s sake, not the plank’s.
- A vapor barrier over a concrete slab still matters. Concrete passes moisture year-round, waterproof floor or not.
- Appliance leaks under the fridge or dishwasher can go unnoticed for weeks. Check them once in a while.
Waterproof vs. water-resistant: the label trick
True luxury vinyl plank has no wood in it at all. There is no time limit, no fine print, no “wipe within 24 hours.” If a room in your home has any real water risk — basement, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, entryway — that difference is the whole decision.
Where we recommend it in South Jersey homes
Basements are the obvious one — most South Jersey slabs carry some moisture, and vinyl simply doesn’t care. But the room we recommend it for most is actually the kitchen: it’s the highest-spill room in the house, and vinyl handles it while looking like real wood. Entryways and mudrooms come third, because melted snow and rain boots are a daily water event all winter.
The bottom line
Is luxury vinyl plank waterproof? Yes — the plank is, completely and permanently. Is a vinyl floor a license to ignore water? No. Clean up standing water, use a vapor barrier over concrete, and fix leaks when they happen. Do that, and a quality vinyl plank floor will outlast almost anything else you could put down.
