Carpet & vinyl questions, answered

How do I choose between carpet and vinyl for my rooms?

It comes down to how each room lives day to day. Carpet is the comfort champion for bedrooms and living rooms — it is soft, warm, and quiet underfoot. Vinyl is the practical pick for kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and busy entryways because its waterproof core shrugs off spills, mud, and moisture. If you have pets or kids, that often tips high-traffic areas toward vinyl, though today's stain-resistant carpet handles real life better than ever. We bring samples of both to your home, so you can see how each one looks in your light and feels in your space before you decide.

What's the difference between SPC vinyl and regular luxury vinyl plank?

SPC stands for stone plastic composite — a rigid, limestone-filled core that makes the plank far more stable than regular flexible vinyl. That rigid core means it will not dent, telegraph imperfections in the subfloor, or react to temperature swings, and it is 100% waterproof from top to bottom. The big difference between our collections is the wear layer: Citadel carries a heavy-duty 32 mil wear layer, while Montclair and Alpine use a 22 mil layer that still performs beautifully in most homes. Choose Citadel for large families, big pets, or high-traffic main rooms, and Montclair or Alpine when you want the same waterproof performance at a friendlier price. All three are SPC, so you get rigid-core stability no matter which collection you pick.

What should I expect during a free in-home estimate?

We come to you at a time you choose — no showroom visit required. We measure every room precisely, check your existing floor and subfloor for moisture or damage, and lay samples down right where the floor will go, so you can compare them against your walls, lighting, and furniture. Then we talk through your timeline, what prep work is needed, and answer every question before we quote. You get a clear, itemized quote with no pressure and no obligation — the visit is genuinely free.

How long will carpet and vinyl flooring last?

With SPC vinyl, the wear layer does the heavy lifting — that clear top coat is what protects the design layer from foot traffic, scratches, and fading. Our Citadel collection carries a lifetime residential warranty (30 years light commercial), Montclair is backed for 21 years light commercial / 16 years commercial, and Alpine for 16 years light commercial / 10 years commercial — all with lifetime residential coverage. Carpet longevity depends mostly on fiber and padding, but a quality carpet with a dense pad can easily give you 10–15 years of comfortable service. Real-world life comes down to care, and we send you home with simple maintenance guidance so your floors look good for years, not months.

Can you install over my existing floor or does it need to be removed?

Sometimes, yes — and sometimes no, for good reason. Our SPC vinyl planks click together and can float over many existing hard floors, as long as the surface is level, dry, and sound. Carpet needs a clean, bare subfloor with fresh padding underneath, and any floor that is damaged, moisture-compromised, or crumbling should come out before anything new goes down. During your free estimate we inspect what is there and tell you honestly what needs removing and why — and any prep work is included in your quote up front, so there are no surprises on installation day. Skipping proper prep is the number-one cause of flooring failures, so we never rush it.

What's the difference between carpet fibers and padding?

The fiber is the carpet itself: nylon is the durability leader that bounces back from foot traffic, while polyester is budget-friendlier, softer, and naturally stain-resistant. Pile height and style (plush cut vs. loop) change how the carpet feels and how easy it is to clean. Padding is the layer underneath, and it matters more than most people realize — a dense, quality pad makes carpet feel better underfoot, insulates better, and can add years to its life. We never skimp on padding, and we will walk you through the fiber and pad trade-offs with samples in hand during your estimate.

What about pet stains, spills, and staining on carpet and vinyl?

This is where vinyl's waterproof core really earns its keep — a spill, accident, or wet paw print sits on the surface and wipes right up, never soaking down to the subfloor. Carpet has come a long way too: modern stain-resistant fibers repel most spills, and blotting quickly handles the vast majority of accidents. Real talk, though — repeated pet urine is the hardest thing on any carpet, and no fiber makes it truly effortless. If your pets are chronic offenders, we will usually steer you toward vinyl like Citadel with its 32 mil wear layer, which is about as pet-proof as flooring gets.

Do you offer financing, and what's the actual cost range?

Yes — 0% APR promotional financing is available, subject to credit approval, so you can love your floors now and pay over time. As honest ballparks: carpet typically runs about $2–$8 per square foot and vinyl about $3–$6 per square foot, depending on quality, style, and what your project needs. Room size, furniture moving, old-floor removal, and subfloor prep all affect the final number, which is exactly why we measure before we quote. Your free in-home estimate gets you a firm, itemized price — what we quote is what you pay, with no hidden costs added later.

What happens after installation—warranty and care?

Yes. Every installation comes with our workmanship guarantee. If something isn't right with the install, call us and we'll make it right. Flooring materials are covered separately by the manufacturer's warranty. Terms apply.

Why should I work with J&J Flooring instead of a big box store?

Carpet and vinyl are all we do — not one aisle among fifty, but our entire craft. We are a local, family-owned South Jersey team, and the people who measure your rooms are the people who stand behind the installation, unlike the big box model where the work is handed off to whichever subcontractor is available. We bring samples to your home, quote honestly and itemized, and answer the phone when you call. We serve 20+ communities across Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester Counties, and we stand behind our work.
